Farmer’s Market

Friday mornings I like to go and sit comfortably in a corner of Pioneer Plaza where the fountains are located, with a good view of the Farmer’s market.

The tents, the boards, lightposts, trees and other paraphernalia I can draw almost from memory alone. The challenge is drawing and placing figures to make the scene come to live and interesting.

The problem is two-fold,  learning to draw people that are constantly moving around, and placing these shapes in your sketch such that it enhances the picture.

Parked cars can be used in a similar way to break up a long straight line ( edge of a road, sidewalk or base of a building etc.), and usually they don’t  move untill the owner comes back.

I enjoy the activity of sketching and look at it as an exercise or “etude”, particularly on a day like this when the weather is nice, when a live musician is playing in the background and one has a fresh coffee to sip on.
