The recently constructed concrete spillway provides an interesting contrast with the existing concrete dam structures in this park that are more than 100 years old. At that time it was built as an essential item for an industrial operation. A few years ago the City of Nanaimo announced that the dam structure had to be removed for safety reasons and that the creek was to be restored to its ioriginal environment, however, public pressure seemed to have changed their mind. Was that public money for constructing the spillway well spend? I don’t know, but the coliery dam park is a well used beautiful little park.
There is a new picnic table across the pond from the spillway that I used to sit comfortably and make this sketch under an overcast sky earlier this week.
