Plein-air pen and wash on paper

The Modern Cafe is a popular restaurant in downtown Nanaimo. When I first came to this City in the 1990’s, it was a mundane coffee shop. The original building originating from 1910 was renovated several times. The neon sign, not very visible here as it is obscured by the trees, is a mid 1940’s style  and is representative for the type  of signage commonly used in downtown in those days.

I started out with a sketch in pen and ink and developed it further with some washes as shown here.

At this point I went home for lunch to return later and continued the watercolour wash.

When I came back the lighting had changed, the scooters were gone and only a small crowd was left on the patio.
