Shack Island is located in Hammond Bay within the Nanaimo city boundaries. At low tide it is actually a peninsula. There are a number of shacks that originate from the early 1900’s when there was a whaling station in this area.
About a dozen one and two room little shacks are still there from those days. There are no a amenities or utility services such as water or electricity. It is my understanding that these shacks belong to long time Nanaimo families that camp there for a few weeks in the summer and on weekends. Owners keep fixing, modifying and repainting these little structures. For many years we used to live close to Hammond Bay and I made many sketches of these shacks until last year when we moved downtown.
We visited the area yesterday with our Monday morning paintout group to do some sketching and painting.
