Plein-air pen and wash on paper

This morning our Plein Air Nanaimo group visited Newcastle Island. We took the foot ferry between Maffeo Sutton and Saysutshun. This ferry is now operated by the Snuneymuxw. The service is excellent and the fee is reasonable. Upon arrival we settled down in the shade of the old cabin to sketch this view of Nanaimo.

I used the Strathmore Aquarius ll watercolor paper that does not buckle when wet. It has a smooth surface with a slight grid allowing the pen to slide nicely around your subjects. The paper was 22″ wide by 8″ high and mounted on a thin plywood board.
